Dear NDP Member of Parliament,

Whooee! Well, friend an' foes, I just sent an email to a few NDP MPs via an online thingamajig that lets you send it automagically. The online tool has a pre-written letter that you can sign but you can change it or write yer own letter in the space provided. Here's what I sent.
Dear NDP Member of Parliament,

Once the gun registry is scrapped, it cannot be fixed. The Harper government will never resurrect the registry. If it is killed, it will not rise, zombie-like, to be tweaked by well-meaning MPs. The only way it can be fixed is if it still exists.

First, you must prevent it from being eliminated forever. Then and only then, can it be improved upon.

When you send an old car to the junkyard and they squash it into a 1 metre x 1 metre x 1 metre cube, it's a little too late to start talking about doing a tune-up.

If you want the registry dead and gone forever, then go ahead and vote to kill it. If, however, you want to improve it -- as Jack Layton says -- then you must allow it to survive long enough to be improved.

By the way, I am a rural dweller. Some rural Canadians are quite outspoken in favour of killing the gun registry. They speak loudly but I do not think they speak for the majority of rural people. We register our cars, our boats and even our dogs. Why would we not agree to registering our deadly weapons?
I signed it with my real name and postal code. I got a CPC MP so maybe them Dippers'll just toss my email in the scrap pile along with the gun registry but I figgered it was at least worth a try.

If I coulda sent a picture, this'd be the one:

Hey, Mr. Goodwrench, how about a tune-up?

Yes!! Bravo! I just sent a very similar letter, in response to an NDP response (if youfollowed that!) I'm sharing this blog!

... and I trust that the same email went to the 8 Liberals who voted to dismantle the Registry .. you know the 8 that no one has heard from directly, but that Iggy assures us he has sufficiently threatened to vote the Party Whip????? (.. or are you only writing to the New Dems as part of the overall phony campaign that the LPC has hoodwinked you with???)

JimBobby said...

ya know, Left Dog, I find it fairly insulting when you say I've been hoodwinked by the Liberals. You know I ain't a Liberal. I'm a treehuggin' Green and the Greens come out callin' for the Dippers to save the registry. If you wanna say I'm hoodwinked, I'd prefer you say I been hoodwinked by the Greens.

I'm still waitin' for an answer about how you fix something that's dead and buried. That is what Jack's been sayin'. I actually ain't paid much attention to what the Grits are sayin' other than they're whippin' the vote.

The fact is that the NDP is not whipping the vote. That is what I am paying attention to. The CPC has bought billboards, paid for a dedicated scraptheregistry.ca website, bought media ads and whipped the CPC MPs. That says that this is not a private member's bill, despite the CPC spin.

From where I''m sittin' it looks like the NDP is willing to cut off its nose to spite its face. If the registry needs fixing, like Jack says it does, then the only way that can happen is to keep it alive.

FWIW, I am concerned that some LPC MPs might get the flu on Sept 22. However, the LPC says its a whipped vote and MPs are expected to show up and vote.

I don't see any ties between http://www.emailthem.ca/ and the LPC. It is, of course, possible that the http://www.emailthem.ca/guns/ page was an LPC effort. If the NDP supporters of the registry want to make a similar page urging those 8 LPC MPs you mentioned, I'll be happy to send an appropriate letter to them.

Just because I want to see the registry saved does not make me an LPC dupe. Calling me an LPC dupe does insult me, though.

Good one, JB. LeftDog is consumed by his partisanship. That much was apparent in how he ducked your straightforward question twice on his own blog. Don't ask it again, he might explode.

The Mound of Sound said...

By the way JB, have you checked out the latest Tyee? It's a pretty scathing indictment of the Tar Sands and how Canada is beginning to act like every other corrupt petro-state. Dobbins calls fighting the Tar Sands and the Kitimate tanker port every progressive Canadian's "fight of our lives."

JimBobby said...

Thanks for steering me to that Tyee piece. It deserves a link.

Yes, choosing our battles is always a conundrum, especially when there are so many causes to fight for. I agree that the tar sands battle is one we need to fight. That doesn't mean I don't have time to work against the nuclear industry and the gun lobby.

Personally, I see a big problem on the close horizon in the form of anew food crisis. We're not there, yet, but we're approaching the same conditions that saw millions starve in 2008. Preventing such preventable suffering is as high a priority for me as they get.

The Mound of Sound said...

Did you see that the World Bank has endorsed land grabs by wealthy states of farmland in poverty-stricken countries of the Third World? It's all the rage for the Chinese and the major oil producers of the Middle East these days.

Then you've got outfits like Goldman Sachs ginning global food markets. One of the effects has been to drive food prices out of the reach of the people in the countries where the products are grown. How sick is that?

It still looks to me like the Libs are hoodwinking people with this.
#1) the refused all advances by us to fix the Registry problems WHEN it was still possible to do so.
#2) they waited until it is almost time to have the vote and then portray this as a simple 'black/white' - 'yes/no' issue.

I can't answer your question as you pose it because it unfairly ignores how we got to where we are. The Libs made this a 'yes/no' situation and you want a yes or a no from me on something that did not have to get as ugly as it has.

JimBobby said...

How we got to where we arer is fairly irrelevant when we are trying to decide where we go from here. What happened in the past is over and done with. Now, we are faced with a decision of either retaining an imperfect registry with the hope, however faint, of improving it or scrapping it altogether.

The simple fact that you refuse to admit is that once the registry is scrapped, there is no possible chance that an improved registry will spring from the ashes. Either we keep it and strive to fix what doesn't work or we kill it. I agree, that's a yes or no question. Do we keep it or not? Who we blame for bringing us to this point makes no difference to the question of how we should proceed from the current position.

"How we got to where we are is fairly irrelevant when we are trying to decide where we go from here. What happened in the past is over and done with"

How convenient for you! LOL! :)

JimBobby said...

Seems like you really do want to cut off your nose to spite your face. We are where we are. That's the reality of the situation. How we got here is neither convenient nor inconvenient. Blaming the Liberals or the Conservatives is meaningless. It's what we do now that counts and we have a simple choice. We can scrap the registry by passing Hoeppner's bill or we can keep it. We don't have a third option. We can't turn back the clock and erase former mistakes. we can deal with what's in front of us. If grudging partisan bitterness prevents us from making a sensible choice and retaining a registry that is useful, if flawed, then IMO we are worse off for it.

Are you contending that what happened in the past is not over and done with? We don't live in a "What if" dreamland. We live in the reality of here and now. Here and now in our reality-based world, we have a yes or no choice.

And, as far as being hoodwinked goes, I think the involvement of the NRA, a powerful US gun lobby, has done plenty to muddy the waters and foment anti-registry sentiment among would-be law-abiding Canadians. Seems like the CPC and NRA are working hand-in-hand.

Christian Louboutin New Piaf Pumps Black---follow me Platform fashion didn't really die shortly after that, they hang around in the fashion mainstream while newer footwear trends came by and by. YSL took more notice into breathing new life into platform pumps and other big names like Versace, MiuMiu, Steve Madden and Christian Dior followed. In 2006, women went for the platforms with slender heels, and continue to embrace the trend. Understandably, the design sure is sexy and is nothing like a one-season trend.
